I thought this was either a river or paper birch, but am now having my doubts about either of those. Any ideas?

The leaves and bark shout River Birch to me. I three of them in California and they looked like yours and these Google photos:

I had some river birches that looked a lot like that - before the cows ate them.

What threw me off of river birch is the leaves do not match the symmetry of the #1 river birth photo in our database (which may be misplaced?). But from other sites, it does appear that the edging is a bit irregular so I'll go with river. I am fairly certain I have both river and paper birch, and I know the paper birch came from my native plant society and is slightly different looking than this tree, and changes color on a different schedule in the fall.
