I have Aspen roots from an area recently dug up. Can I grow a tree from the roots only?

Welcome!

Yes you can. Use roots that are about 1/2 inch in diameter. Bury the root pieces just under the surface in a pot of well draining soil, keep them warm and damp.
Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and proclaiming...."WOW What a Ride!!" -Mark Frost
