I've been told this is a type of hibiscus but I'm not convinced. I found it growing in Blake Garden (UC Berkeley), Kensington, California. (Zone 9, I believe).

Thanks in advance for your help.

Could be a mallow of some type.

It is Lavatera trimestris which is a synonym for Malva trimestris aka Annual Mallow, Rose Mallow, Tree Mallow.

This identification comes from Seed Collecting at Blake Garden, posted Mar 2, 2011.
