I am a native to Virginia and I have never seen this. Please help!

No leaves, just a six inch stem and this fruit hanging off. 1.5inches in diameter. I tore it open, and it was filled with a clear sweet smelling gel with some cloudy stuff in the center. Small yellow seeds in the center part. Almost like a lychee in terms of clear flesh. Touched it to my tounge and it tasted sweet, smelled good. What is this???

Could be a Mayapple that has lost it's leaves for the season.
