Pardon me folks as I asked about this Iris awhile ago, but I just saw a cultivar that very well could be my NOID and wanted to ask again. Does the photo of my Iris match up with Schreiner's Cowboy Caviar? Thanks for any help.
Richard

It sure looks like a good match. How long have you had it? Cowboy Caviar was introduced in 2013 so if you got it before then it's definitely not right. The only way to know for sure is to get a rhizome of Cowboy Caviar from a reliable source and grow them side by side. Then you can compare growth, bloom time, foliage, and all the details of the bud and blossom.

It looks close enough to be worth getting a test plant to check them out. Smiling

: Thank You!

Thanks to all for your kind replies and info. This Iris was suppose to be English Charm when I ordered it, and I was 'fit to be tied' when the bloom came up and I knew it wasn't what I ordered. Long story short, I'm planning a rhizome trade with Rob and when I went through his plant list I got so excited when I saw the photo, because after 2 years I may have finally found the name of my Iris and can stop referring to it as 'the Iris I hate to love'. The funny thing is that I'm planning on giving Rob a rhizome of English Charm and he might be able to give me Cowboy Caviar in return so I can determine for certain. You just can't make this stuff up! Hurray!

I have both of them, and for me at least Cowboy Caviar is a better bloomer. I am guessing the original mix up was with Schreiner's considering the two blooms in question. At least they sent you a nice mistake (I always seem to get mystery blue ones).

Just to clarify, it wasn't Schreiners that sent me the wrong iris, unless they are a sub-contractor with Brecks?

That explains a lot. I thing Schreiners sells off a lot of extras to the brokers like Brecks, and what they decide to name them is anybodies guess.

It looks very similar to Cranberry Swirl, too. That was my first guess when I saw your photo.

I think they 'sweep the floor' after they are all through filling boxes and then sell them along with a list of possibilities of what they are to the garden catalog people. Shrug!

Stacey,
Funny you mentioned Cranberry Swirl as It was my first guess a couple of years ago. I contacted Schreiners and sent a photo and they kindly responded promptly that the iris wasn't that cultivar. Thanks to Rob, I think it's quite possible that I now have a match. In any event, this past spring it put on quite a show with 3 spikes even in a bad location. In the end, it's 'won me over'.

Here are some old pictures I have of Cranberry Swirl. I moved it and I haven't seen it in a long time.

Cranberry Swirl is more pink, especially the standards. Cowboy is more brown.

Yes, Schreiner's sells off to garden centers and such. Sunrise Elegy was hitting Lowes at the same time it was a new intro on the Schreiner site at $45/50 a pop.
