got a pot from a friend- this surprise popped up- about a foot tall

Wow, that is a beauty! I'm not sure what it is but it reminds me of Snow on the Mountain (Euphorbia marginata)

I'm sure someone will come along with an exact ID for you soon!

I agree. There is also Snow on the Prairie - for flatlanders, I guess. They look alike to me.

They do look alike so I'd say it's one of the two!:
Snow on the Prairie (Euphorbia bicolor)
Snow on the Mountain (Euphorbia marginata)
