These dianthus look hidebound to me. Thoughts? Maybe started in a peat pellet, graduated to a 4-pack to sell quickly. Healthy? Beats me.

The only way to save them is to tear the rootball almost to the soil surface (start at the bottm and pull them apart - don't damage the plant) into quarters and plant on a little mound of soil in your planting hole (visualize miniature bundt pan). Otherwise, they will never claw their way out of that mass of roots.
Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and proclaiming...."WOW What a Ride!!" -Mark Frost
