As a comment about Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Waves of Joy'), DancingGenes wrote:

So far, Waves of Joy isn't doing well for me. I purchased it last spring. It's one fan, with one scape (not an issue being its first year). But the biggest issue for me is that the first 4 blooms never opened, they open slightly and stop, so I haven't seen it bloom yet. I want her pollen, and pics lol
The weather has been between the mid-high 70's to mid to high 80's. Night temps in the 50's. It is in a full-sun spot. I'm wondering whether the night temps are too cool for it. Has anyone else experienced this? I've never had this issue with the other plants that I purchased at the same time as Waves Of Joy.
It's been an anticlimax for me for a week now, seeing that "it's gonna bloom tomorrow," then by 1 pm the next day, then 4pm, then 6pm, 8pm, still not opened, then it starts to wilt.
Knowing me, after I post this, I bet a bloom finally opens for me... "Crossing everything"

What you're describing is an extreme case of non-opening, but after looking through the database, and coming from a cool-weather area, it doesn't really surprise me that much. Few of the pictures in the database here are open correctly, and many, if not all of those were taken in warm night climates. ("warm" being overnight low temp above 60-65F)

Opening problems and "canoeing" is a problem which plagues many of the eyed and patterned daylilies. Even though Waves of Joy is not opening for you, you should still be able to get at the pollen. A percentage of the seedlings should open better, particularly if you cross it with things that are near-nocturnal or early morning openers. (I was told long ago to never cross two daylilies which have the same fault.) Since my peak bloom occurs well before the weather warms enough for nice-looking flowers, I frequently hybridize by mental image, and it works out fairly well.

(Edited to add; I thought you were hybridizing from your comment "crossing everything", but I realize now that you were probably referring to crossing your fingers and toes and... in the hopes that the flower would open.)
