Hi all. Saw this little shrub at Zoo Atlanta today in Atlanta, GA. About 2 feet tall, multi-stemmed, with variegated leaves that appear to grow in whirls. Very little branching, with mostly naked, skinny stems, except for the growth tips. Growing in deep shade in an area that appear to be that way the entire day, with maybe only some occasional dappled sun (though, it appeared like it might have appreciated at least a little more sun or brighter shade).

It vaguely or superficially resembled a small rhododendron overall, but the leaves had a smooth surface and were somewhere around 4 to 6 inches in length, maybe a little over 1 inch at their widest point. As for leaf texture, to put it in painter's terms, the surface was not quite flat, but not quite glossy - more "satiny". It appeared the variegation distorted the leaf shape, but they loosely had a spathulate, linear, or lanceolate shape.

I broke off a leaf, no discernible sap produced.

Any ideas? Thanks!

I have no idea what it is but it sure is interesting. My first thought was possibly a dogwood of some sort. I'll be watching to see if someone can identify it.
