It's been 2 1/2 weeks since I planted my lemon balm seeds from a seed company ( can't remember which one). I've had not one plant start yet, and I'm worried they won't be established by winter. Same for the spearmint. Planted 3 weeks ago, and no germination. My previous spearmint plant didn't come back in spring :(. What are the normal germination times and/or helpful hints for these herbs??? Should I plant more seeds? No nursery around here has either of them left.

Michelle, how did you plant the seeds? In cell packs or something like that? or direct-sown in the ground? They both take up to a couple of weeks to germinate, and the plants are going to be pretty tiny for some time; I think they both would be best started early indoors. However you start them, the seeds are very small and shouldn't be planted more than about 1/8" deep, and you need to keep the soil moist so they don't start germinating, then dry out and die.

Hope that helps Smiling

I planted about 3-4 seeds in each 4" pot, and all I did was scatter them on the top of the soil and mist them into it. I also planted some in a window box the same way. The spearmint I planted is in 4" pots too, and a few in cell packs. I mist them every day because it hasn't rained here in about 2 weeks. I will transfer them to the greenhouse for the winter, but that's assuming I get any plants! Sighing!

It sure doesn't seem to me like you did anything wrong... I hope they will still sprout for you! Crossing Fingers!
