Tree of Heaven - Ailanthus altissima. Pull it up before you can't.

I agree, that looks like Tree of Heaven (Ailanthus altissima) an extremely invasive species in many areas of the country, including Ohio: http://forestry.ohiodnr.gov/tr...

Yikes! I just did some research on it. I pulled it up and I hope I got it all. I see them all over the place, I guess it makes sense now knowing that they are so invasive! Thanks everyone!

I suspect the Trees of Heaven behave differently in China. In California, the Army Corps of Engineers offered a bounty on them because they out-compete the native oaks and walnuts. They turn into monsters, up to 80 feet tall with trunks several feet around.

Here in Reno and in Idaho, they look more like big bushes.

Wow Daisy! I see them all over the place here. They line the roads and everything. I'm wondering how it managed to make its way into my flower bed, but I hope I got it all!

There are a number of other plants with similar leaves that you might see beside the roads such as sumac. There's a characteristic of the leaflets of Tree of Heaven that differentiates them from the others and which is visible on your photo, but on a drive-by you wouldn't be able to see that.

The roots travel sideways before they set a taproot. The trees are easy to pull as the sideways root is just a couple inches below the soil. If you got that sideways root, you are good. Smiling
