I noticed these neon yellow mushrooms in my snake plant. What are they and why are they there?

Hi Radishgirl!

I believe those are Leucocoprinus birnbaumii . They won't hurt the plant one bit and personally I let them grow when they appear. Your potting mix probably was contaminated with spores, a mushroom's version of a seed - spores are like dust so going airborne is pretty easy.

Popular opinion says they are non toxic, but I wouldn't test it out - only mentioned this in case you have house critters that like to graze. If they must go, just take a spoon and scoop them out.
"The Universe speaks in many languages, but only one voice. It speaks in the language of hope; It speaks in the language of trust; It speaks in the language of strength, and the language of compassion. It is the language of the heart and the language of the soul. But always, it is the same voice. It is the voice of our ancestors, speaking through us, And the voice of our inheritors, waiting to be born. It is the small, still voice that says: We are one. No matter the blood; No matter the skin; No matter the world; No matter the star; We are one. No matter the pain; No matter the darkness; No matter the loss; No matter the fear; We are one. Here, gathered together in common cause. we agree to recognize this singular truth, and this singular rule: That we must be kind to one another, because each voice enriches us and ennobles us, and each voice lost diminishes us. We are the voice of the Universe, the soul of creation, the fire that will light the way to a better future. We are one."

The spores for this likely were transported in the soil. When they get the right conditions, they sprout. They aren't harming anything so you can just pick them out and throw them away.

They are supposed to be harmless but I'm not willing to test it. They smell just so darn good and mushroomy that I didn't trust my cat to leave them alone. I had a really big infestation that kept coming back so I pulled them and sprinkled the soil with cinnamon. Haven't seen one since.
