|I have a potted cypress tree. I think it's Hinoki. It has been in dappled shade
for the past 20 years. Sadly, now I need to move it. Will its take sun?

|Gradually introduce it to sun.
It will be fine.

|I had a Hinoki Cypress in a pot for several years. It lived under oak trees on my deck. When I moved to Reno, I introduced it slowly to sun and planted it in the ground. The Cypress hated it. I eventually, after another move to a less sunny spot, put it back into the pot and moved it to my daughter's shady front porch. Its as happy as a clam.
They are supposed to take full sun - that has not been my experience. But as you live in San Luis Obispo where it's a little cooler, maybe you will have better luck.
Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and proclaiming...."WOW What a Ride!!" -Mark Frost
