Hello,
I received the attached plant as a condolence gift after my mother in law passed away. It did not have any tags or identification on it. I've watered it every other day but it appears to be dying, leaves are blackening and falling off. I'm not really versed on plant species and such but really would like to work on this to keep it alive. Can you identify it and do you think it would be best if I re-planted it? Should it be planted outdoors?

Thank you,
Pamela Queen

Hi Pamela, Thank You!

It might be a Gardenia. Back up and take a photo of the whole plant. Was it blooming when you got it? If so, are there still flowers or can you describe them?

When I looked at the leaves my brain said Gardenia.

Thank you for your responses. I've attached new photos. My goodness, the leaves are falling off as I turn it. I think there were small white flowers on it when I first received it, but none right now. I am located in Long Island, New York and wondering if the weather has anything to do with the shedding. I have kept it indoors as I didn't know what to do with it, but if it is a Gardenia, it should be placed outdoors and in the ground, correct?

Again, thank you for your help.
