It's not fair to those that only use IPad or Iphone to upload to restrict them from adding photos if they can't tag. Most of the photos I just moved had a comment added to indicate what the plant was.

Maybe prompt for the tags OR a comment indicating the name of the plant?

I kind of have a feeling that some people are using the landscape photos as a place to drop pictures of plants whose exact identity is unknown to them (which makes them harder to put in the database). Because they don't have to label the plant in that area, that's where they leave the photos. Maybe?

We get those on occasion. I add a comment suggesting that they post to the Plant ID Forum and provide a link and check back several times to see if that was done before deleting the photo but quite often they never come back.

Not having either a phone or tablet, what is the problem with tagging using those devices? Does adding a plant name to the comment field trigger a connection to the actual plant similar to a tag?

The comments field is the exact same thing as these posts so no, it doesn't link unless they copy and pasted the link.

Since the IPhone and IPad devices use sweep and drag motions to function, you can't use the dragging motion to draw the boxes.

Then I would agree with the suggestion to somehow not accept a landscape photo unless it is tagged. Otherwise, they really don't add much to the database, and some are really quite lovely. Seems a pity to see them just get buried.

Is it possible to just add the plant tags to the photo without attaching them to the box coordinates in the photo? That way the photo is properly labeled with the correct plants and linked to the database, there just wouldn't be the boxes around the individual plants. The boxes are nice, but if requiring them stops people not on computers from being able to label and link to the database it shouldn't be mandatory.

Maybe start with adding a label and then say you can draw a box around the plant in the photo. If you can't because of your device, then the photo still has labels associated with it. Maybe also have the option to edit it later on computer and add the boxes to the existing labels.

That would be a good compromise. I think most tagged photos are easy enough to differentiate without the boxes, particularly when one can open the database to compare photos. I really think the landscape photos are a great feature, especially helpful when planning new beds or rejuvating older ones that might be a bit tired looking.

FYI for others having trouble with tagging. I use a new-this-year Lenova PC. When I use Firefox, the tags all shift to the left margin for some reason. I just tried using Microsoft Edge and the labels worked perfectly. Weird. I haven't tried using Chrome, not sure if its loaded on this computer or not.

I use Firefox and it is working great on my PC with windows 10. I wonder what could be different with your Lenova?

No clue, but I am technology-challenged. I am also using Windows 10. My last computer (Dell) I mostly used Chrome and the tagging worked fine with that. But, I have really really bad luck with anything electronic, and usually just shrug my shoulders and look for a work-around. I'm just happy to be able to tag again and I really can't tell any difference between Chrome/Firefox/Edge/whatever else might be out there.

@Calif_Sue. Should the second part of the sentence say:
You can not use the dragging motion to draw the boxes?
I know I can not add the text boxes.

I think these devices will become more prevalent. Extreme close ups and wide shots do not photo well on a phone or tablet, but a lot of other things will. Learning to work on a device can yield good photos. If I go out early morning or late afternoon, I am pretty happy with my photos of each plant. I actually have had some turn out better than ones on the camera. My older eyes like the big screen on a tablet. Tablet pictures are quicker to upload here. If there was a way to attach a list to the picture that would be nice. I have viewed NGA on a computer very few times.

Later in the year, I plan on borrowing a computer to try and add text boxes. Using or borrowing a computer is not a daily or weekly or even a monthly occurrence, so I want to work on as many photos as I can in one sitting. I do agree that in addition to a close-up, I like to see the plant in a garden setting. Attaching landscapes to plants in the database is very important, even if it is just comes from a list to start with.

I have a frustration level, too many devices, and trying to combine info. If you require text boxes to post pictures, I would have to stop. My pictures will never be with the computer that I will have to use to make the text boxes. On a computer I can not make text boxes of nothing and add a photo later. So it would be logical to allow these photos first and hope they are tagged later.

Just so that I understand, landscape photos are anything with two or more plants, even if it's two varieties/ cultivars of the same flower? What about outdoor water features or outdoor statues or yard art that no particular clear image of a plant can be made out?
What about outdoor visitors like lizards, or squirrels or birds where would those go?

@Dave Especially what about holiday yards? I know people look for ideas of seasonal plants and yard decorations. It would be nice to have a seasonal/holiday section of photos. Click on Halloween, Autumn, or Fall, Christmas or Winter year round and get ideas. People like to see what others put on their front door. I know many apartment communities have door and/or balcony contests for the holidays. This gives another area for gardening in apartments to be able to share in. My thread gets good comments on my indoor seasonal photos, too. Just throwing that out there.

May everyone have exceptional blessings for the remainder of the year!

Altheabyanothername, I love your idea of being able to check mark boxes for seasons. It would make it so easy to search out garden/yard ideas for each season of the year. Great idea.

@Dave,

What were the Landscape photos originally called? As a I look in my profile, I've done 44, but they weren't called Landscape photos when I did them. When did they start being called Landscape photos and why the change of name?

I agree.

I have put up a couple of patio and greenhouse pictures (not landscapes by any stretch) because they qualify as multi-plant pictures. Community pots and planters can also make for excellent pictures in this area, whatever its official name may be.
