Hello! First time poster, novice gardener. My husband and I planted a small organic jalapeño plant this morning. We bought it from Home Depot. Flipped the pot over to plant it in our garden, this red jalapeño looking creature was feeding off the plant. It was moving and looked like it was breathing. See photo. Any idea what it is? Google was of no help. Will this harm the plant in the long haul?

It looks like the pupa of a sphinx moth, compare with some of these pictures:

It would not have been feeding on the plant, but they do wriggle a bit.
