I should not be worrying about my newly purchased irises, but just wondering if they can survive without watering. It's been 11 days thus far...can't get back since I-10 is still under water.

I purchased them from the Historical Iris Preservation Society sale recently. There were some fairly 'old' ones.
Really, so much more important matter than this - water flooding home - thank God, the house was spared.

In September 2010 I dug a few irises from Cape Cod, forgot they were in my luggage, found them when we went to Maine in February 2011, and remembered to plant them in April 2011. They did just fine.

My blessing to all those who live in Texas, all the rescue workers, volunteers, and those who have donated to the cause. Group hug I tip my hat to you.

I don't know if I'd have the heart to go back to the areas that have been and still are flooded. Seeing everything turn to mush would just have to be the sickest feeling. And then there are those who lost love ones. I just get a sick feeling thinking about it. Sad

Your iris should be fine, they are tough plants , and can easily go many months without planting, or watering. I'm glad your home was spared the worst of the devestation.....!

Thank you all for your prayers - SE Texas is so appreciative of all the first responders from all over the country. We will have a long way to go before being 'normal' again.

I feel so sad when I know some of my friends and family are not as fortunate as my family...my cousins are still under mandatory evacuation but they waded in to start the cleanup. Will have to wait a few days to see if the water recede enough for us to drive into her neighborhood.

Even more sadness, the death toll that keeps rising.
We will need all the support we can get. Keep praying. Thank You!

Betsy- continue to stay safe, especially while going into the areas still flooded. There are so many dangers in standing water, from stepping on sharp objects, to waterborne disease to wildlife both living and dead. And prayers for the safety of your cousins and all others during clean up.

It is just heartbreaking that we now have another hurricane on our doorstep and hope everyone prepared for the worse and experiences the best.

Betsy: Yes absolutely will continue to pray for you all.

Leslie: Yes Irma is really scary. The fact that it's already a 4 worries me. I just really hope it stays far from you all. Well for that matter, that it stays far from the US

Betsy: Just checking in to see that all is OK with you? Hope so!

Leslie: I am not sure how much affect you will get from Irma, but sure hope you don't get too much. Also that Jose stays far away from shore.

Hi Ya'll,

Thanks so much for your prayers and encouragements.
We made it back last Saturday after we got the OK that the water system was up and running and I-10 E was opened.

My friends here had to get rain water for the toilets and drinking water was trucked in. Our church is the staging area for recovery workers - so many workers from all over the country, FDNY, Team Rubicon and even out of country, a group from Israel; our Baptist Men brought in a portable kitchen that can feed them. The Red Cross is delivering food to people and I will be helping them next week.

The irises are all good like ya'll said. They are showing new green leaves. Hurray!

This is really wonderful news Betsy! So encouraging to here how people have come together for you all and how prayers are being answered. Also it's good to see how you and others in the community are keeping that fighting spirit through the recovery process!
