Here is one more photo of a succulent at The Getty Center, a blooming Aeonium Arboreum: |

What a striking contrast of the bright blooms with the dark foliage! |

The aloes up there are pretty cool too. I garden for the pollinators. |

Yes, the vibrant yellow, and deep burgundy's! How impressive...makes me want to go out and look for one at our local nurseries. They have them almost all the time! |

You went and did it now Tarev. I went to Home Repo on the way home, and they had all kinds of fun stuff, Succulent/Cacti on sale in two inch pots. I bought several. Will arrange them in a pot and take a picture for you all when I get them potted. They are wee little ones, nothing as big as what you showed. But had to start somewhere...lol! I'm sure I can find a pot out on the garden bench somewhere to put them in. Oh, I did buy two of the Aeonium Arboreum, and one Aeonium something...I'll try and see if I can identify it tomorrow. It has mostly green leaves with just a touch of red at the very tips of some of the leavees. alan |

The next best thing to being there oneself is enjoying someone's lovely quality pictures. Thanks for sharing. Paul Smith Pleasant Grove, Utah |

I was wrong on one of my plants, it's not a Aeonium, It's the Echeveria Hybrid 'Neon Breakes' So today I bought 2" pots for $2 each of: 1 - Echeveria Hybrid 'Neon Breakes' 1 - Crassula perforata 'String of Beads' 2 - Aeonium arborteum 'Black Rose' 1 Pachyveria 'Powder Puff' I did get them all potted up tonight, along with two beautiful African Violets. Will take a picture tomorrow, so you can see how I arranged them. I wish I had a smaller natural colored gravel to put around them, but had to settle with what I had. |

Wow, nice list Alan. ![]() Tarev what an amazing place to visit. The only plant I have in your photos is Melianthus major. What are the stunning red plants in the sixth photo from the top? |
tarev Jan 5, 2012 10:49 PM CST |
Hi Lyn, I think the red plants are the ones commonly called flapjacks. Cannot come nearer them ![]() Alan, welcome to the happy world of succulents and cacti! ![]() |

Thanks Tarev. |

Flapjacks aka Kalanchoe thyrsiflora, but I've never seen them so red. Must be that California sun. |
valleylynn Jan 6, 2012 9:18 AM CST |
I read that they can become very red when exposed to intense sun. Never saw them that read though. |
tarev Jan 6, 2012 9:47 AM CST |
Must be the sun indeed, it was quite warm there at about 82F in LA, while our daytime high in our area was in the low 60's, bone dry around Cali. |

Here is a photo of my flapjack last April 2010 showing its very deep red coloring: And here she is in shade, a very nice color contrast, and quite forgiving too, easily bounces back when it gets too soaked and cold when it does manage to rain here in our area during winter. |

Excellent comparisons. I have recommended the pictures for the database! |
