Hi, quick question everyone,

What do you do if you have a seed pod where one chamber is wizened and ripe and starting to split but the other chambers are still green?

Do you empty the ripe chamber (carefully) and leave the other two on the scape to ripen further or do you leave them till all are ripe?

The chamber that looks ripe is only slightly cracked and I have a little organza bag around it with the drawstring tie fastened tightly so if any fall out they should fall into the bag.

Appreciate any advice, please.
Thank You!

Can you see black seeds in the wizened chamber?

Hi Valerie,

Yes, there's definitely something in there, not sure if just one seed or more than one.

Here you are, not sure how clearly you can .make anything out.

I'm a bit nervous of opening them too soon as I didn't do a lot of pods and the seeds in the first three were either very few, very small or mushy.

I would consider that ready! Please let us know the cross and how many seeds you got, too.

Is the other side still too green to be ripe, should I just empty that chamber and give the other side a bit longer or should I empty the green side too?

Edited to add--it is a dip.cross, Valerie.

Fickle Lady x Aquamarine.

Thinking of donating "Fickle Lady" to a friend to make room for something new. It is a nice plant but the flowers are usually way down in the leaves and although it is quite pretty I don't love it. Have crossed it with tall scaped ones.

If I donate it I can always go and get some pollen from it or make some pods on it in her garden, or even have a couple of fans back if I change my mind. It sets pods easily and pollen seems good.

You can try to empty the sides that are ready and leave the others to mature a bit longer. It would be an interesting experiment.

Okay, I'll do it in the morning when there is a bit more light. It's quite gloomy here now it's getting towards evening. Will let you know what I find.

It is nice that you can give Fickle Lady to a friend, but still have access. It is a nice looking bloom. Good luck tomorrow Crossing Fingers!

Nikki,
I've harvested over a 1000 pods this summer...that entire pod is ready. If you try to harvest some and leave the others, the ones left behind may get moisture inside and rot (or begin germinating, as I've had happen quite a number of times too). This is just my opinion, of course--but if I came across this in my garden, I would pick the entire pod and harvest it.

id put some panty hose or netting around the pod to catch the seeds and leave it for the others to get hard.

Thanks, guys,

Will get a better look in the morning when the light is better, I've put the organza bag back over it overnight (I just took it off to get the photo).

I think the other side is going wrinkly at the bottom but a combination of poor light and less than optimal eyesight means I need a better look. No rain forecast for during the night so should be okay until the morning.

Hi everyone,

I went and had a look at the pod this morning and it was wrinkling at the base of the other side so decided to bring it in as it is forecasting heavy rain again today.

11 seeds inside, one was tiny and soft so threw that one out leaving 10 that look good and feel hard.

So seed results so far;

Aquamarine x Star Child (6 seeds)
Honky Tonk Blues x Star Child (9 seeds)
Chicago Sunrise x Unknown (bee pod--1 seed)
Fickle Lady x Aquamarine (10 seeds)

The next pods to ripen look likely to be the other 2 Aquamarine pods:

(Aquamarine x Star child #2)
(Aquamarine x Smoke Scream sdlg).

Thanks again for your advice. Thank You!

Forgot to ask a question.

Getting rather worried about the pods on Star Child, they were the earliest made, (5th July for three of them, 1-2 weeks later for another three).

They are very big, and they started going light green at the bottom quite a while ago but then they have just stayed like that with the tops still dark green and very hard. Almost like arrested/suspended development.

Other pods on other plants done later have overtaken them in development.

Any ideas/suggestions?

Hi Valerie,
They are still very green but one looks as if it might be starting to wizen at the bottom, I think it might be that Star Child just takes a long time to ripen compared to other varieties or maybe just stays green if that's possible.

One pod cracked slightly when I squeezed it yesterday so I brought it in, 6 black seeds inside, all look and feel good but they are from one of the pods where the label disintegrated in the rain so it is either:

Star Child x Baby Blues
Star Child x Little Fat Cat
Star Child x Dark Sprite (unreg. but after some detective work I
THINK it might be Black Knight).

Got a decent result from Aquamarine x 'Lawrence's Legacy' (Garden name for my purple uf seedling which is either a Stargate Portal seedling or Smoke Scream sdlg, looking at it would guess most likely S.Portal), got 17 seeds which is appropriate as my Dad (Lawrence) could make ANYTHING grow!

Although most pods haven't had many seeds I should have enough spares to let you have some, it might only be a couple of seeds from some crosses though.

Still have a few pods to open. Are you interested in having any of the Starchild x (unknown mini) seeds (the three pods that were either Baby Blues etc)?

The others I send will all be named crosses or from named x seedling.

Thank you, Nikki, any seeds would be very welcome. Unknown parentage is fine Smiling I often plant bee pods.

I am just starting to get some ripe pods now. We are having some warm, dry weather and I think that is helping. Like you, my first pods only have a few seeds in each one. I am hoping for better with the later pods!
