Hello,
I am just curious what other peoples opinions are on this topic. I know for myself I prefer more of the plant I order. As a seller I try to send extra fans of what is ordered. I could do either. Please post what you like to receive. Thanks!

Teresa,
My knee jerk response is bonus fans but in truth the answer is more complicated.

I have gotten bonus plants that I have really enjoyed and I know I would have not purchased. They have ended up being a push into a plant opportunity otherwise missed. (I have also ended up with plants that I just regift to neighbors or friends).

Thanks for asking!

Same here Jill. When I get a bonus from a hybridizer I've had some awesome bonus plants. Others I feel they are just trying to get rid of some they don't want and I'd rather have extra fans.

Not all sellers in the UK give bonuses, about half do and half don't.

I am always more excited to receive orders from those that do to see if I get a nice surprise on top.

The orders that don't have bonuses always seem a bit disappointing by comparison, even if the order contains my 'favourite' plants I have ordered for the season because after all they are all just green leaves when you get them.

Even if it is a bonus I wouldn't have chosen I always appreciate it as I see it as a 'thank you' gesture from the seller and I am more likely to order from them again.

However, I am only a small backyard gardener not a serious hybridiser so that might make a difference.

Edited to add, I received some lovely bonuses from Germany. I had ordered mainly mini and small diploid varieties with patterns and the seller sent bonuses which were also diploid patterned minis which I thought showed the seller had thought about what I had ordered and sent plants he though that I would like.

I like when a buyer can give suggestions for bonus plants (worth a % of the total). Many sellers hover around 20% of the total. That's a fair bonus for both buyer and seller. You wouldn't want someone ordering $15 worth of plant material and expecting a $25 bonus. Being clear about bonuses up front nips this in the bud. If the suggestions are unattainable bonus fans are always a welcomed site for buyers.

I like getting bonus plants, too. The sellers I deal with here give bonus plants, usually after you spend a certain dollar amount. Some give you the option of extra fans or bonus plants. Some ask for a list for them to chose the bonus plants from. Some of my favourite plants have been bonus plants! For example, this year a bonus was Nature's Purple Butterfly. I wouldn't have picked it, but it is a favourite now Lovey dubby

Thank you for the replies. I can say also that I have gotten a few bonus plants that I loved and others that I didn't. I guess I could give the buyers the options of extra fans or a list of bonus plants to choose from.

Good topic Teresa!

As for my Take,
I am just happy when receiving a bonus. Most times though I do prefer and extra fan or two. Probably because the way my mother, sister and I prefer to buy CVs. We almost always attempt to by in clumps when visiting a garden. This allows us to share amongst our selves if we want. Granted dividing a big healthy clump is not for everyone.

I have also, received some very nice gift plants as well. One of my favorite bonuses is this one,

Bonus plants are always appreciated, and some have become favorites. However, I don't expect bonus plants from every seller, especially if it's a small order. I like extra fans, or gift plants, both are generous offerings of appreciation, and always appreciated. I enjoy having the ability of choosing candidates for bonus plants, but also enjoy surprise bonus plants, both can be exciting experiences. My main concern when buying daylilies, is healthy plants, that settle in well. I've bought from a couple sellers that don't give bonus plants, but sent nice healthy plants, and have wonderful customer service ( the most important qualities for me when buying),therefore I'm happy, and will not think twice about ordering again. I've had mixed emotions over bonus plants in the past, it's a curious topic in the daylily world. Smiling

Great thread topic, it's always interesting seeing how others feel about the topic. I tip my hat to you.

I believe the notion of getting extra fans in place of a bonus plant is a non-starter. If I were a seller I certainly would never do that - it's like throwing money away. I believe that sellers give away bonus plants for a couple of reasons: One is what many of us suspect and that is to unload less popular cultivars. On the other hand, if the seller is a hybridizer, they may be trying to get a new cultivar known by the public. It may simply be as a sign of good will, a thank you for your business, with the hope that you will like the plant and order more.

In my current situation, I would prefer to not receive bonus plants because I don't have room for them. I recently received two, one from a seller I had never bought from before, and it was unexpected. The second was from a seller I have used before, but I forgot that they always send a bonus. Once before I bought from that seller I told them to not send the bonus and they forfeit their shipping fees.

I will leave many of my recent purchases/acquisitions in pots over the winter and see what I get next summer. If I like them then great - if not I'll put them at the curb and tell my neighbors to come get them.

Of the bonus plants that have bloomed for me and I have enjoyed:

However, when Karol Emmerich sent my daylilies from Springwood Gardens, she sent huge fans with several extra fans of the ones I ordered and I was absolutely tickled pink!

I like to think that bonuses are good will and a thank you. Some would probably agree that they are incentive for repeat business. Afterall, who doesn't like to get a freebie.

@daverme
Dave, understand your logic due to limited space. But, there are always more pots. Whistling

If my purchase is a single fan, I will appreciate if they give me extra fan instead of bonuses of different daylilies. If I purchase a double or triple fans, I would rather get a bonus. So far with all the purchases that I have made, I have been very happy with bonuses or extra fans or none. But I wonder if it is more of a headache for a seller to try to figure out what his customers want as bonus or extra fans. Since we are on the subject of bonuses and gifts, I just want to give a shout out to Bill Marriott for his extremely generous and beautiful gift and bonus daylilies.

I am not up on my daylily history, I don't know how the bonus idea was started and how it has progressed over the years. I would actually prefer cheaper prices with no bonus. I like the idea of ordering what I want and not having to plan for extra planting spaces for plants I might not even want. I will say I do enjoy getting extra fans and it is sometimes fun to get a nice bonus plant, but with the money saved without bonuses I could have ordered a plant I really wanted. I don't think the system is likely to change anytime soon however.

An example of frustration was when I ordered from one entity this year and the fans I received were very small with very few roots and they included a very small "Bonus" that was of no consequence and also very small with very few roots. Not ordering there again - they are barely hanging on.
I agree that if you are getting single fans a double fan as a bonus is much appreciated! And then there is one on NGA that I purchased several from a couple times and she gave me bonus single fans of a bunch of some to try plus some iris - what a sweetheart!!!!!

Many good observations on the facets of plant size and bonuses. I agree with Larry that price is a consideration often not discussed on evaluation plant sites. One sees pictures of three or four fans received, but nowhere is there the revelation that the buyer may have paid 2-4 times the going rate for that plant.

Above all, I want a healthy division of the plant I ordered. A bonus does not make up for the poor condition of ordered plants.

On a pricey new introduction, something extra is expected. It may be, as noted, a bonus that the hybridizer wants to get distributed.

For people with smaller collections, bonuses are often relished. For others, it is often a duplicate or something not useful.

I have noticed that sometimes when ordering a single fan, I got a double. But it is unrealistic to expect that. Most of the time, the single fan was not only single, but smallish or so pumped up that it languished for a long time.

I agree that the bonus culture has many pitfalls. Buyers often have unrealistic expectations. I once had a buyer tell me that she wanted a lavender diploid as a bonus. Talk about being specific! Expecting extra fans can also lead to disappointment. Most of the plants I get on the auction have no extra fans. If your order is substantial, it probably would be best to discuss the matter before shipment. On a small order, really, one shouldn't expect either extra fans or a bonus if the price was reasonable.

Re. Someone asking for and expecting a Lavender Dip.as a bonus--that's just cheeky!

I am expecting an order from Belgium this autumn and the seller asked me for a list of plants for him to choose bonus plants from. I actually emailed back and said I was rather uncomfortable with specifying plants I wanted to get for free and instead told him my favourite types (small & minis) and colours and types I either am not fond of or just don't work in my climate (teeth, heavy ruffles).
