I'm still not seeing any kind of Dogwood, but it is very difficult to make a positive ID from a single, unclear photo. Please, can you add some better photos? Thank you.

Cornus kousa fruits:

If it was a dogwood the leaves would be opposite (with one exception), but I can't really tell from the picture. I'm leaning towards their not being opposite which would rule out dogwood but hard to be sure.

I never said it was Cornus kousa , just giving a similar looking Dogwood LEAF example to compare to the original pic.

I have 2 kinds of dogwoods I see everyday and I think it is a dogwood

Since the fruit in the photo looks nothing like any dogwood fruit (to my eyes), I will hold off trying to identify this one until cwhitt supplies more photos. I tip my hat to you.

Absolutely no question that this plant is the invasive exotic species Lonicera maackii - Amur Honeysuckle.

Can't be Winterberry Holly (Ilex verticillata) as that plant has alternate arrangement of leaves, where this plant is clearly opposite in arrangement of simple leaves.

Dogwood (with primarily opposite arrangement of simple leaves) is generally a good guess, but the buds shown are definitely not a match, and the location of the fruit (axially versus terminally) don't match at all.

HoneysuckleHoneysuckleHoneysuckle - which those of us that garden in the eastern US see all the time.

Am I just not 'getting' the last sentence? What does that mean? DieDieDie...

I didn't think dogwood either, but didn't have the facts to back it up, just a lot of dogwoods in my area, both native and cultivated.

I think the DieDieDie is because it is an invasive alien. I'd wondered about Lonicera but the opposite leaf arrangement wasn't as clear to me in the picture as it is to John. I notice there are some smaller darker coloured berries in some places in the picture, not sure if they are on the same plant.

It is my understanding that all loniceras have hollow stems, so a simply snap test might be useful.

I have an extreme dislike for this species. I apologize forthwith to all I have offended with that sentiment. Yes, "DieDieDie" is my recommendation for all these invasive exotic species.

Additional photos continue to confirm that this is none other than Amur Honeysuckle - Lonicera maackii.

@ViburnumValley - you just said the magic word! Honeysuckle! When you said that I suddenly remembered honeysuckle blooms last spring. And, it does indeed appear to be invasive - they are growing all along our parking. Hurray! I tip my hat to you. Thank You!

You are quite welcome - and islander mentioned it first above.

As you make choices going forward with your landscape/garden, you can consider all the positive species mentioned above - and then some. Suburban Columbus OH is a great horticultural hotbed. Take a visit to Franklin Park and some of the other fabulous new parks being established along the Scioto River to see the numerous ornamental plants available and successful.

I'd say you could grow just about any of the shrubby and tree form Dogwood (Cornus) species, as well as Winterberry Holly (Ilex verticillata), and many many species of Viburnum (Viburnum sp.).

Flowers, fragrance, fruit, form, fall color - yes, you can have it all...
John
