Is it best to let this type of hoya hang or is it ok to stake the branches upright?

Amy, it generally is grown staked or on a trellis. Mine has outgrown it's trellis before tho and had a scandent type habit but then it wanted to tip over.

My Shooting Star has tons of buds but only a few are lasting to full flower. Thought it was maybe too close to window and getting cold so moved it a little. Still bud blasting tho, can't tell if it too much or too little water or what it is. Any ideas?

Help
Love my one year old Hoya lauterbauchii and for 11 months it has been doing so well. This aggressive vine has grown 11 feet in 11 months. But this past month the leaves are turning yellow and dropping. No change in watering routine, but we are in the dead of winter and not as much light as summer at this south-facing window. Very sheer curtains cover window to protect from direct light. Pot sets on a dish of pebbles, so would never have been sitting in water. Careful about not having over wet conditions, let plant dry out. Fertilize one time in late winter with Epsom salt - one half teaspoon/gallon of water. Other 12 Hoya at this location thriving. Closely inspected - no insect problems.

Any suggestions? Thank you!

My Shooting star Hoya is staked, and I have found out it likes to sit in water literally, since it is just so dry here. So I try to keep the media always wet.

Hi Kathy, sorry I do not grow that Hoya, but I typically refrain from fertilizing my plants in winter. I wait for Spring.

I've never grown Eriostemma lauterbachii and I'm mot sure what the issue might be that's causing the chlorosis with your plant. You didn't mention how often you water but like many other plants, Hoya's do not need as much water during the winter months. I'm thinking that it's more than likely a nutrient deficiency, possibly lack of iron or nitrogen.

Thanks, Lin. You could be right. When would you fertilize with iron?

I would not fertilize this time of yer but *Blush* Gee, I have to be honest ... I am really not the one to offer advice for feeding any plants. I'm so bad about ever remembering to fertilize. At times, during the spring and summer when I remember to feed the orchids, I will try to remember to give the Hoya's a bit as well and I always dilute to about 1/4 of what the label says.

I also see leaf yellowing on hoyas that don't like cold in the winter. I think Eriostemmas fall into that category. I have one that last year did this while being in front a window, found later that the window leaks air and it was getting a chill. This year I moved into a warmer area and very little yellowing or leaf drop. Could also be a deficiency as was pointed out, I don't fertilize at all in winter and water about once a week. I keep them on the dry side since they are kind of hibernating in the house.

If you can manage it tip it out of the pot and check the roots. It's one that really does not tolerate getting too cool. Even with care watering, some of the Eriostemmas will have problems at that temp. 60º is absolute minimum for this one. But still wants high humidity. Some of the others in that group that are a little more tolerant are Rutie, cilita and Optimistic. We had quite a bit of cold weather here in Central Florida this winter and even some of mine in the greenhouse pouted where the humidity was high but had nights that dipped to 55º even with the heaters going. It could be just a nutrient thing, but I would check those roots out PDQ.
