Tropicals forum: Public tropical gardens near San Jose, CA?

Any recommendations for public tropical gardens that can be visited near San Jose, CA? I'm especially interested in seeing unusual edible tropical plants.

I have seen some very large and very impressive orange trees here and there, but the commonly planted trees and other plants seem largely inedible and rather boring compared to what could be grown here.

I agree that CA has many lovely plants. It would be nice if there was more emphasis on edibles.

I have been to or are aware of nearly everything listed on that help link. Sadly, they are not very interesting.

The bizzare thing is that everyone tells me how this whole area used to be orchards. Honestly, I'm having a hard time believing them. There are virtually no reminant trees, not even in big old backyards of people's homes...
