Start by posting your question in the Ask a Question Forum. If the conversation is lively enough and there is enough interest, the owners of the site may decide to create a new forum for that purpose. Otherwise, just accept the answers given and enjoy the conversation.

Here in NGA we also have free space to create a blog. If you want, you can make a blog to chat about almost anything (keep it child-friendly); you may develop a group of followers who are interested in the same things you want to discuss.

Under the Community tab at the top in the menu bar, click the drop down menu & you can see all the available forums, would your questions fit into any of these? Are you perhaps referring to starting a new discussion thread rather than a new forum to ask your questions.
To start a new thread on the Ask A Question forum, from this page, click on the blue underlined 'Ask a Question forum' just above your post and it takes you to the main AAQ forum page. Scroll down to the bottom and click on the » Post your own question. It opens a new page to post your questions, click preview then submit.

SShakespeare, you may want to check out various blogs to get a feel for how others use them. Some are chatty and specific to their own gardens; others are more of a personal organization tool. Folks can 'follow' specific blogs, which then triggers a notice whenever the blogger updates his/her blog. Have fun with it.

Thank you Bonehead. I recently looked at some of the blogs and you were right about them. But I want to start some forums, and post it on the forums pages. Like the iris forums. I might ask my stepmother how to create forums, because she is a member on this site, and can show me how to do it.
Thanks for your advice about blogs, I will definitely use it when I read them. Hurray! Hurray! Hurray!

Ian, I think only the Site Admins can start a new forum on NGA. You can submit your idea for a forum to Dave and ask if he will start one for you. Usually a new forum is only initiated if there is enough interest from other members.

I'd recommend, as greene suggested, that you begin by posting a question on this Ask a Question forum and see how much interest you generate first.

Shakespeare, I looked at your blog posting, and think what you are attempting is a great idea. I also think, however, that your iris photo contest would be better suited as a thread within the iris forum. That would give it much more exposure to iris growers, everyone loves to look at photos, and away you go. Each member who participates in your photo contest would be notified of new posts, and once your contest is over, it stays within the iris forum but would kind of drop out of sight (unless it continued to garner comments). Does that make sense?

As far as other people 'seeing' your thread, I have a short list of forums I actively follow, none of which are plant specific (I'm more of an everything-goes gardener). I also have my home page set up so I get a listing of ALL new threads throughout the site, and often something will catch my eye in forums I am not particularly following, but then I'll open that thread and perhaps jump in (or not). It works well for me.

There's also a photography forum where there might be people who are interested in a thread like this.

@SonoveShakespeare, we're still trying to understand what you want to do. When you say, "...my own forum..." do you mean one that you will run and/or moderate? If so, I'm guessing that you'll have to connect with the NGA site owner(s) if you want it to be one of the forums on the NGA website.

If you don't want it to specifically be a part of the NGA website, then there are lots of ways to start and run your own forum site using free website programs, or some that you need a domain name for and some that you don't. I just Googled "creating a forum website" and got lots of really good hits. Lots of people really like Wordpress, but it's kind of an individual thing.

Good luck!
AKA Joey.
