Hello,

Sorry for noob question. I just built a raised garden bed and now i am about to add soil to it. How my house is set up i cant really go get soil from a place in a truck and bring it back, i have to go the bag route. I was wondering the best way to do this. Most likely ill just be growing plants and flowers in the garden bed, no edibles.

Cost is not a factor to me so i am wondering if i can just grab gardening soil in the 2 cubic feet bags and fill the whole planter bed with that or is it better mix gardening soil in with top soil? I personally dont know what is best so looking for suggestions. Thanks

the dimensions are 12 feet long, 2 feet wide, 18 inches high. But the soil will go up about 15 inches or so.

Welcome to NGA! I wouldn't use any soil from a garden or yard. That can introduce pathogens and insects. Buy the bags of potting mix or potting soil. I like to mix in a few bags of compost and manure, but everyone has their own idea of what to use. I mix it all thoroughly , water and let it settle to see if you need more bags. It takes a lot more than you'd think! Enjoy your new raised bed!

i didnt mean taking it from the yard. I meant is it okay just buy bags of potting mix/potting soil and fill up the whole bed with that because the price does not matter for me and in the long run it will be the easiest for me to buy in bags . . .

For sure, mix in some manure. And perlite. I think potting soil can be hard to rewet when dry. Compost can help too. Oxymoron but you would want a mix that will retain moisture but drain well and allow tiny air pockets in the soil.
