My DH and I started our married life with separate finances. At the end of the month, we would each add up our separate expenses, and figure out what percentage of our separate salaries we had spent. Whoever had paid out more got a refund from the other. Eventually, we gave up this rigmarole and got joint accounts and cards (but I still keep a list of my cash expenses by type, just to keep track of how much I am spending and on what). Having only joint accounts backfired in the end, when I discovered that I had become an un-person with no credit rating due to DH being the primary on all our accounts and bills, and so now I have a separate credit card again.

We actually do have separate checking/savings accounts, because mine are for my business, but that's about the end of it. That's a good thing to remember about joint accounts too! My mom had a joint savings account with me when she retired here, but we did not think about making her checking acct joint with me. When she passed away, it was unbelievably complicated for me to access the money remaining in her checking acct. In the end, I simply walked away from it...it would have cost more to get it out than was in the acct. However, after 5 years, the bank relented and released the sum to me, which I then distributed to her great-grandchildren. It was a lesson: always ask for details in anything financial
The end is nothing, the journey is all.
