So I'm walking through Harlem after a 7-hour lecture/reading event on James Baldwin at the Schomburg Center, and this weird guy with a shopping cart is selling plants that, based on the fact that he was kind of doing the "heroin lean", had probably fallen off the back of the truck somewhere. Conversation was something like this:

Me: "Did you grow these?"
Him: "Erm, yeah."
Me: "What's this one with the pink variegation in the leaves?"
Him: "I... dunno. It's pretty though."
Me: "Well can it be cultivated as a houseplant, or is it outdoors-only?"
Him: "Erm... both?"
Me: "How much?"
Him: "Three dollars."
Me: "Will you take two?"
Him: "Sure."

So what exactly did I wind up with here? If nothing else, it's kinda cool looking, and if it dies, whatever, that's what a 20oz Dr. Pepper costs around here.

Hypoestes is a very attractive plant when they reach full size.

Groovy! Well I repotted it into a 5" bottom waterer - it was severely rootbound - so we'll see what happens!

We bought ours from Ace Hardware in a 6-pak and planted them in the ground. Slow starters, then they took off. They make a nice background or border plant.

@Hagbard, Ian, we were doing some shopping at Home Depot today and ran across this little gem of a Hypoestes. Around $3.50 in a throw-away pot. Mrs bought it a bigger pot and replanted it. I like the color. May try to take some cutting off in the early Spring to transplant into the garden. How is yours doing?

Nice find! Mine is doing pretty well after a watering and a few days under 6,100 lumens of 5000K full-spectrum light, see for yourself!

Ian, it looks like it's perked up nicely. Mrs put ours on a shelf, not well lit. I think we'll end up putting it closer to a window. Per the tag, it like medium light. The ones in the garden get full sun until around 2pm then they're shaded by a large tree. They seem quite happy with that arrangement. I use 6500K lights for my vegetable starts.

You got a good deal. Last time I was in Harlem all they offered me was a bag of oranges...with no peels.

They're fluorescent, not LEDs. I use 6 4' 2-lamp shop lights. Inexpensive, and they work great.
