I am a zone warmer than you. I enjoy the fall color of the peony foliage, and then when it wilts to the ground I cut back hard (to the ground) and mulch everything with a layer of shredded deciduous leaves.
I want to live in a world where the chicken can cross the road without its motives being questioned.

Thank you both, for the question and the answer. I have to overwinter a peony for the first time this year.

Very glad I can cut it back as it is right by the front door.
