I've been so busy with renovation that I haven't done much in the garden this year. I've started making the pathways, but the kitchen renovation got priority, so my garden looks pretty wild right now.

Anyway, a couple of days ago, just by accident, I noticed that my Hoki has got a viable seed. I thought that the plant was sterile, because it has never produced any viable seeds. Never ever, and it was planted in 2004! The only explanation is that there was no any other TP that bloomed in the same time and close enough to pollinate Hoki. Last fall I planted the Black Dragon Holds a Splendid Flower, Cup of Shining Night and Leda in the back, close to Hoki, who usually start a season. I suspect the Black Dragon is the "father" because he opened just after the first Hoki blooms. The Cup of Shining Night could also be the other parent, but this is less likely, because the Cup bloomed a bit later. Leda bloomed much later, so I excluded Leda.

I know that I will not have time to take care of the seed. If someone wants to try, I would be happy to send it. We can mail seeds to foreign countries without any phyto-certificates. Right?

I would love to try to germinate and grow this seed out but I think there are others here who are more skilled in that process. It is such a precious seed I would not want to chance wasting it. But if no one else wants it I would love to try.

No problem.

I should have saved the seeds from the Guardian and Snow Lotus, but I was so busy with the renovation that I missed their seeds. Hoki has one more big seed pod. Let's wait for a couple of days to see if there is anything inside.

I wonder if the plant will bloom more or less next year. Hoki must know at some level that she produced real seeds this year. I wonder if she will change the behavior now when she knows that there are other TPs around that bloom in the same time.

While I was out planting new roots I spotted this open seed pod on Angel Emily Tree Peony! Here’s a photo of the seed pod and a bloom from Spring! I am
Thrilled.

Mary Stella and Anya, I thought that seed pod was “blind” like the ones on the Itohs are. I was surprised and elated and ran back to the house to get scissors and a plastic bag to put it in. I remember deliberately applying pollen to all the blooms on her, but can’t remember which varieties I used! Confused

Now I’m going to have to google and see if the seeds are viable if they float or sink and test them!

LG, the float/sink test is just an indicator, they can still be good if they float but sinkers are a higher probability. Congrats!

Congrats, LG! Whatever you crossed it with, I am sure you will get lovely seedlings. Angel Emily is so gorgeous! Good luck with the germination. I planted some of my seeds this year as soon as the pod became brown but not opened like yours. I am not sure if that will help with speeding up germination. Will find out if I get any seedlings next spring.

Hmph?? Wonder why yours are maturing and mine are still green. I brough one inside to see if it got warm and dry if it would pop. I have researched all my new peonies and several are good for hybridizing. Very fertile. I really only picked them as heirloom varieties, and some species that are hard to find. I do love Harvey's species section - and rare peony section. Some anomola mixes, officianalis, and tenuifolia. I really like the singles

Mine aren't splitting yet either, Mary. And if you like Harvey's species peonies you might want to look at his site after this last chance sale, said he'd be selling hand germinated species seeds.
