Deb, what happened?

I must not be on the some threads. I've never seen anything approaching toxic here. But Deb, I'm sorry you had problems and I wish you could stay. I've always enjoyed reading your posts.

My apologies. I just had a bit of a melt-down with the news, Facebook, and this site as well (what is this bug and how do I kill it, what is this weed and how do I kill it, etc.). It just felt like everything was negative and I figured the best plan was to just stick my head in the sand. Rather than doing that, I am going to limit myself to friendly conversations only and ignore everything negative. With FB in particular, I am freely using the 'delete post' option and focusing on my friends' photos, hoping that will somehow sway the algorithym. Easy on this site to just scroll past unsavory subjects and unwatch those that go sideways. Plus take a big break in general from the computer.

You scared me, Deb! I thought we'd lost you forever. I'm glad to hear from you again. When you get overwhelmed by the "everything is negative" feeling, try reading the Grumpy thread in the Sandbox forum. That's what I do when I'm depressed, and perversely it make me feel better. Also, I recommend chocolate, preferably Belgian or Italian.

Agree, if there are posts like that here, don't click on them. I've never even seen a disagreement discussed in an unfriendly or personal way on this site, no negativity at all, just supportive, friendly people. I come to plants to get away from all of the other stuff in life & hope this site remains peaceful & only about plants.

There are no ads for not killing "weeds" or "pests", or for not using a whole aisle of various noxious potions, so new gardeners are only exposed to the messages that do say those things are a necessary part of gardening. The "I don't add anything except plants" crowd only has their own voices to carry that conversation, in places like this website. Deb, I hope you'll stick around and continue discussing!

I think many of us get computer overload. Very understandable.

But.... Hurray! Oh what a relief. Hurray!

I always come and see what your up to in your large and lovely gardens in the Pacific Northwest forum. I bet there are a lot of PNW forum members like me, who are inspired by your posts. Just reading how hard you work on your beds has got me up off my butt more than once.

Glad we get to keep hearing your advice.

I won't defend FB because I think it is largely indefensible.

By its very nature, this site and its forums are designed for people to point out their plant problems and seek solutions. The citing of problems may seem negative, but reaching out for solutions is positive.

A while back I had a problem here with negative people. I call them trolls. They would egg people on by saying inappropriate things.

My solution was to use the 'ignore' feature that dave provided so I would no longer see their posts; plus use the 'report' button when necessary. The last thing was to remove myself from the 'chatty' threads. No I keep myself to myself as much as possible, only answer questions about plant ID or general plant advice if I have experience of knowlege.

The trolls will not win this one!!

In the past 2 weeks, my car died at the roadside leaving me stranded, my phone went crazy and would not cooperate, then my laptop acted up and will need to be sent off for 2 weeks of repair. I still have my health...well, what's left of it... Rolling on the floor laughing ...and the sun came up this morning so I guess all is right with the world, even though my little corner of it seems to be imploding. Like this morning I ate breakfast, brushed my teeth and (yuck) vomited up my breakfast into the impeccably clean toilet. Some days start off bad but there may be a rainbow at the end, so stick with it.

Hang in there. You can do this!!! Thumbs up Hurray!

Facebook? I only use it for informational and educational purposes related to my interests, i.e., museums, zoos, medical libraries, the Humane Society (local), the local Seed and Feed, etc. Besides the wise experience of people here who have so much combined knowledge in all gardening topics, I like forums like the Pets because I find the simple connections in life make me happy and it's what we share in common. I wish I could contribute more but since I'm a novice gardener, I'm taking away more than I am giving. I hope you'll reconsider, Deb, because your contributions would be sorely missed and your absence would be greatly noticed.

Gayle
