Honestly I'm not sure this is a question as much as I want someone to say Im not crazy. Well atleast not when it comes to this... 😛
Id bought bird seed to take to the duck park, I know but I like the birds!
So I started throwing some randomly out my window in a part of the yard that was cleared last year and had mulch put down n planted 3 crape murtles. Now through last summer this summer Id pulled some weeds from the area. It was strawberries there too and I was stilling pulling those until end of july now I believe there gone and few weeds linger here or there.. I pull them.
Then I started throwing bird seed down.. this is that black mulch space now!!!!

I did just find a strawberry too.
Darn probly because I got overwhelmed with those weeds we have the black netting down to cover the mulch for Those weeds have grown thur and its nearly impossible to get up now! So thats alot of work.
Anyways has this ever happened to anyone else with the bird food.
If i wanted to weed the area weeded Id pick a better weed atleast ! Frustrating. .thanks everyone

D'Oh! You planted your own weeds. And now you have also learned why we recommend you not put down weed guard.

Let me get this straight....
You sowed some seeds. The seeds grew....

Very common for people to get sunflowers and safflower under their bird feeders.

The birds don't care if the birdseed is on the plant... There's no need to pull.

I deliberately leave the lambs quarter growing to feed the birds...

I thought we could get some humor from this. Lol. I'd like to say in my own defense I had nothing to do with planning this out. I just did alot of the work and after care. Lol. . Im silly sometimes but I didnt think it be weed seeds!! Lol I have no idea what I thought it was!!! Ha a ha.
But seriously next time no netting for me. I seen birds get caught in it. The weeds grow through it and thats miserable getting up!
BIRD food must always be hung in basket or made into a feeding block.
See what else did I learned from that.. oh I had huge sunflowers I was pulling out of there. Someone mentioned the sunflowers. Thats was the very first thing I noticed growing of course but I took them down
I didnt want them taking anything from babe crape murtles.
I know there is more Im forgetting atm.. so Ill edit when I think of the 5 other things!

Pamela, you might be able to just pull up the weed netting, with the weeds and all. Shake it off to leave the mulch there. A thicker layer of mulch at this time of year might help your weed problem stay under control.

Yes, I get lots of sunflowers and millet plants under my bird feeders, too. Weeding is just a fact of life in gardening. If it wasn't the bird seed some other weeds would have come up. Birds bring seeds and poop them out onto the ground as well. Fertilized weeds.

Dyzzy,
Honestly I tried pulling the weeds with the netting and weeds at the same time. I wasnt strong enough to do so with the thicker patches of weeds but some did ok pulling up this way. It was very very messy like the dirt, dust wanted to blow all over me . Gratefully I wear protection because it was in my eyes it was a huge messy mess to clean up.
I agree it was easier that way in some spots but other than that I just didnt have the strenth to pull all those roots up at the same time.
Thanks again again everyone for all the very useful information.

Pamela,
do you have a concrete patio? During the winter I put the birdseed and nuts on the concrete for the birds and squirrels. If it snows, I sweep out the center to add more seed and nuts. In spring I sweep all the mess into the center and pick it up with a dust pan and broom. No volunteer plants.
Maybe this will spark an idea you can work with Smiling
