My roof has been under repair for the better part of a year. Finding several days in a row that are forecast to be dry has meant that the roofing company has worked in stops-and-starts. It rains that much here.

For the past several days, though, it's been beautiful and they have made a lot of progress.

However, today they neared the edge of my front porch and in so doing injured or destroyed every single plant that was on my porch except one.

The Sansevieria is the only plant that has no real damage. ALL the others do. At least 40 plants.

Shingles, sticky roofing stuff, pieces of wood, heavy dust, nails...you name it. My plants are inundated.

The little Kalanchoe that a dear friend and I were talking about just before she died last week is gone. The cuttings that a coworker gave me are gone. Two trained geraniums are gone. A beautiful square yellow pot of sedum is gone.

My burro's tail is heavily damaged. Several of my no-ID succulents are heavily damaged. Two of my coleus are covered in goop of some sort and may be goners.

Many of my other plants' injuries are very likely not survivable. I'm talking near-total defoliation, crushing injuries, and massive chemical damage.

To make matters worse, when the roofers were done today they took an industrial leaf blower to my porch to get rid of the nails and in the process snapped many otherwise healthy leaves and branches.

Some of these plants represent several years of care. On the part of me and the people from whom I got them.

My first instinct was to murder all of the roofers with a broken flower pot. However, they looked fat, hard-working, and innocent, albeit stupid.

My second instinct was to sue my landlady for $25 billion in pain and suffering. However, she's nice to me.

My third, and best, instinct was to quickly wash as many little leaves as I could and triage the plants that can still be saved.

I know that in the scheme of things this is a very minor inconvenience.

Sigh.

I am also reading my favorite poem, by Rudyard Kipling:

Rudyard Kipling said:
If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you;
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too:
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or, being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or being hated don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise;

If you can dream- -and not make dreams your master;
If you can think- -and not make thoughts your aim,
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same:.
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build'em up with worn-out tools;

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings,
And never breathe a word about your loss:
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: 'Hold on! '

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with Kings- -nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
If all men count with you, but none too much:
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And- -which is more- -you'll be a Man, my son!
Keep going!

Years ago, my rooftop heated greenhouse was totally destroyed in a fire - not by the fire but exposure to sub-freezing temps. There was no salvaging the dozens of tropical plants. I had to choice but to move on. Consequently, I ended up spending more time raising my young son rather than raising plants. It turns out to have been a better investment. Sometimes bad things open up doors to some better things. Smiling

I don't even have it in me to do that.

But even if I did I should probably wait until they're done with the whole project lest they somehow read it first and decide to cut all my trees down, too. lol

Two days later, these are the ones to whom salvation was offered (all the others unfortunately went to hell).

Thumb of 2017-10-01/Jai_Ganesha/2cd187

I have 17 more that won't fit here and they are temporarily located in various windows until I can figure out what to do.

My winter lights had to be set up and turned on two weeks early but they're doing OK.

If I had plants that I truly cared about and roofers were coming to work on my house, my first instinct would have been to remove the plants - relocating them far away from the work site. If necessary, I would have advertised at the local gardening clubs asking for foster parents for the plants for the duration. Like everything in life, we live and learn from our experiences; we hope that our bad experiences can teach others to do better than we did. Pass on what you have learned so others do not have to suffer as you have. Thumbs up

So sorry this happened! Just because you were not the one paying for the work does not make the damage acceptable. And really, if you are renting there, you ARE paying for the work. Were any of your neighbors' belongings damaged?

Not all plants can be replaced, if that even becomes part of the discussion in a situation like this. No other Dracaena but the one my gramma gave me will ever be the one my gramma gave me.

I hope you reach a point of peace about it within yourself. If your plans for healing include trying to replace some things, please let us know what you seek.
I'm happy to share for postage reimbursement if I have any of the ones on your list.

Something seems odd about this problem. I had my entire roof replaced a few years ago and there was ZERO damage to my landscaping around the perimeter.

Darn! I am just chiming in to say so sorry this has happened. How frustrating and sad for you. Sighing!
