I have a Stuart improved mexicola, avocado.3 or 4 years old. Hardiness rating. To 20 f. I read that most avocados are lost in first years of life to frost. Hear, over winter, upper 20's is norm., ownce in past 30 years it got down to 18 f.
How long, or how big, do i need to protect it from frost, if at all ? It's about four and a half feet tall.

Protect it for another couple years - 4 1/2 feet isn't very big. If you still have some of the old fashion Christmas tree lights that give off heat, decorate for the winter by wrapping the trunk in lights. If you don't, use a trouble light with a Halogen light bulb hanging in the middle of your tree. The Halogen lights give off more heat than the old incandescents bulbs. If you have a chicken brooder light, that will work too.

Here are the Halogen lights at Home Depot:

The new LED Christmas lights will not work. You need something that generates heat. There aren't any Halogen Christmas Tree string lights - I looked because I would love to use some myself. "They" are probably afraid we would burn down our houses when we set our trees on fire with Halogen lights. Smiling

I've often wondered about that. I see that folks use those Christmas light to protect they're tender plants, but where do you find those lights any more? I've certainly not run across them...or bulbs for them.
