I'm lucky to have a couple of Flame Acanthus that the pollinators have graciously visited. I'm now trying to find the best way to harvest the seeds and either make some more for me or share with others. All I've read so far is that your supposed to pick them while brown and still on the plant. Ok...but gosh, what appears to me sure is a hard outer covering - and I'm guessing the seed/seeds are inside? Anyone have any experience here they can help me with? Am I overthinking this or making it too hard?

Although I've not grown this plant, yes, the seeds will be inside of the hard outer covering. Make sure they are totally dry, then harvest those seed heads and carefully break them open. Be sure you have some suitable container to catch the seeds (not sure how large/small they are).

Let us know how your harvest goes!

Yes - I let them get brown on the plant, then pry the husk open delicately with a pocket knife. The seeds come out rather easily then. They look like pepper seeds...flat, circular, thin.

I have 2 pretty large healthy plants, but I plan to share them via seed swaps, etc. so someone else may be able to enjoy this plant also.

I'll be the hummingbirds love that plant. Very nice that you will have seeds to share!
