Can I put down a plastic or fabric between my rows of peonies to help with weed control or can i plant them in holes in the plastic? has anyone had any good luck with this?

I have not tried that, but the plastic might make the soil too hot for peony roots. That is just my idea,-- and not from experience.
I am raking bark out of my beds because it keeps the bed cold too long in the spring.

Caroline, it might depend on where Amy is located. I would think that having black poly between rows in colder climes would help warm the soil in the spring and keep down weeds between rows. I have heard that pine needles is a good weed preventative but I don't have enough for my garden. Also adds acidity which you might not want.

I would be a little leary of planting peonies in holes in the poly, even if the holes were large enough to make sure the crown was plenty clear of the poly. Again, climate --- Amy where are you? You can provide that info in your profile which is always helpful when you need some advice. We can gauge our advice dependent on your climate and soil type.

And, of course, welcome to the Peony Twelve Step Program. ROTFL.....lots of enablers and addicts for our love for peonies. You will 'hear it here first' as to what is available, who is having great sales, and how different varieties are performing.

Welcome Amy! Like Mary Stella mentioned we are hardcore Peony fans! Please share pics of your Peonies!

@anyagoro don’t you use some plastic in your Peony beds? Or is it weed cloth?

I use pine bark mini nuggets but keep them well away from the crowns.

Amy Welcome! to the Forum, we are fans and addicts of peonies here! Hilarious!

Sure, it depends on what zone your garden is in. I saw something black between rows of peonies in many pictures from different peony fields, Hidden Springs for example. Here in Alaska black cover is a good thing for anything since we want to conserve any heat from the sun whenever it is available Smiling Smiling For peonies I use heavy duty landscape fabric which looks like plastic to me but it is not a single sheet but with many small holes. I cover the hole area for peonies and make holes for the plants big enough for the stems to grow freely. It works great for weed control, heat and moisture conservation and at the same time excess of water rolls down since most of my peonies are on a slope. However, this ground cover prevents natural accumulation of organic nutrients in the soil but it is not an issue here because there are almost none of them and we need to add nutrients ourselves.

@CarolineScott -- do you belong to the Prairie Peony Society? Looks like it might be close to you. I got a copy of their newsletter through our Alaska Peony Society of which I am a member. They had all sorts of interesting information on Canadian events, sellers, etc. It's a pdf so if you would like I may be able to attach here. If not, then if you would like, treemail me your regular email and I can send it that way.

Hi Amy, I have plastic over one of my beds, cut through it to plant. I was SUPPOSED to replace the plastic with a nice, heavy black weed mat but got lazy on that last bed, got the first 3 done. I covered both the clear plastic on the 1 bed and the weed cloth on the other 3 with pine needles, helps keep it shaded a bit so they don't heat up as much. It certainly didn't warm the soil faster this spring, those 4 beds were at least 3 weeks behind the beds in the front and side of the house waking up.
So far, both plastic and mat are doing a pretty good job of keeping the weeds down, just have to pull a few that pop up directly with the peonies in the spot I cut through. I'm in a zone 4b here in CO because of the altitude, don't know your zone but if you're not too much warmer than I you should be fine with the plastic.
