As noted, several perennial cultivar names may not be correct.

An image I'm just about to submit is for (Phlox paniculata) Younique Old Blue, which is apparently a selling name; the generally (?) accepted cultivar name (as indicated by using single quotation marks) is 'Versoldblue'; hence the cultivar can be Younique Old Blue (='Versoldblue'). The problem is the single quotation marks in the Plant Database and sometimes the "also sold as".

The ultimate relevance for gardeners is that no business or other interest can own a cultivar name.

I'd guess it also depends on what authorities have been chosen for the "accepted" cultivar name(e.g. RHS, etc.).

Two other examples, mentioned, are (Phlox paniculata) Nicky (='Düsterlohe), same basic problem (language) and (Phlox paniculata) 'Red Caribbean' , also sold as Top Shelf Red Caribbean, not so.
