Dear N.G.A. staff , and members, I have a wisteria tree in a container on my deck, and I'm wondering how to over winter it. My "hardiness zone" is zone 5, ( downstate New York), and I'm not sure whether to leave it outside, or bring it indoors. Could someone please give me some advice. Gentle Giant

Wisteria are hardy to Zone 5 but, in a container, it would have to be hardy to zone 3 or 4. Do you have a unheated garage or shed you can move it to? If not, you will have to try wintering it outside in a protected spot with a lot of insulation around the pot.

Is it grafted? If so, you will have to protect the top too.

Don't take it into the house. That's the very worst thing to do to a sleeping plant - they just can't take the warm winter house temps. Wait for the Wisteria to go good and dormant - let it sit through a good couple freezes - then haul it in.

Edited to add: Don't forget to water it during the winter
