Hi everyone,

Going to have to go up to Scotland at short notice and will be away for at least three days, possibly more depending upon circumstances.

My seedlings are still in small pots out in the garden but are looking a bit paler than I would like as we are getting shorter days now.

I need some advice as to whether to leave them outside where they will be unprotected to get as much light as possible but risk them dying from excess rain, sudden storms etc. or put them in cat run for protection and risk them dying from lack of light.

At the end of the day they are only seedlings and hardly a priority in the circumstances but would prefer them not to die if possible so any advice much appreciated.

Thanks guys! Thank You!

Three days with low light won't kill them, whereas excess rain could. So putting them somewhere cool (and preferably non-windy)where they won't need watering while you're gone would be my choice.

@sooby--thanks Sue, that helps. I can borrow a 125w cfl blue grow light for a few hours before we set off, should I put them under that to give them a boost before we go? It is the sort with reflector than can be height adjusted, if that makes a difference.

@touchofsky--Hi Valerie,

They vary in height but are all within the 2-4inch range.

For small ones like that, I would also recommend putting them in the cat run.

If it's only for a few hours I don't think I would bother with the light but it wouldn't do any harm. Or are you thinking of keeping them indoors somewhere with the light on while you're gone also?

@sooby, no, I won't be leaving them indoors with grow lights, would be too worried about leaving it on unsupervised while we are away, even with a timer.

I will put them in the cat run and just hope that they make it. There are always other seeds if they don't and other things are more important.

Thanks for your advice, both of you, I really appreciate your help. Thank You!

I assume not, but will there be cats in the cat run?

You could put half in the cat run and leave half where they are ... hedge your bets.

@danita--no, no cats will be in there, we will be away so the cats will be in the boarding cattery.

@touchofsky--I have a little greenhouse/cloche frame and cover that fits into one of our garden table/trays (it is like a butler's table/tray so the table has a raised frame around the edges and then the greenhouse/cloche frame can just be put into the tray). It is actually the frame for the 'vegtrug poppy' -I don't know if you have those in Canada or the US.

I could put some in there with the cover partially unzipped for ventilation and put the rest in the run. The cover ties on and the frame is tied to the table so it is pretty secure.

@touchofsky,

Hi Valerie,

Sadly my father in law died yesterday so I am still away. I doubt that they will still be alive by the time everything is sorted but that's not important now. Will keep in touch.

Best wishes,

Nikki

Group hug I am so sorry, Nikki. Even though he was so ill, it is still so very sad and difficult.
You may be surprised about your seedlings, they are very tough, but there are lots more seeds to start.
Condolences to you and your family.

Thank you everyone for your kind thoughts and condolences. Thank You!

Most of the seedlings survived, just lost two Little Rainbow x Mary Ethel Anderson seedlings, I have two of that cross left so hopefully those two will survive.
