Will it help my indoor plants to keep the regular overhead fluorescent light bulbs on all day and evening? They're standard room lighting bulbs in typical ceiling fixtures.

Fluorescent lights are in the right color range for decent plant growth. Standard incandescent bulbs produce light that is of little value to plants. Keep your overhead fluorescents on for 8 to 12 hours per day. Of course, some plants do better under artificial light than others, but most common indoor foliage plants do well under fluorescent lights.

Thank you! I assume from your answer that, while closer is better, even standard ceiling fluorescents can be beneficial.

I suppose they can be as helpful as perhaps my plants do in my office. Which is not much, at all really. Are there windows in this room? You can try growing some true low light plants.

Yes, most standard overhead lights provide adequate light for low light plants as long as the lights are on at least 8 hours per day and are more or less directly over the plants.

Low light plants that do well under lights only include, Pothos, Chinese Evergreen, Peace Lily, ZZ Plant, and Dracaena 'Lisa.'
