I know this must happen more than I know but the photo is clearly marked and they just cropped it to not show the copyright. I recognized it right away as mine and did a quick google search of the photo on their site and it came up with my photo on this site. I did contact them with a brief but terse email to remove it. Will that work and what more can I do without a watermark across the whole photo? If they would have just asked it would have been flattering but to just rip it off is the worst. Grumbling

I agree. This has happened to me and your post spurred me to check the offending site; guess what? My photo was back again. Unbelievably, after they agreed to remove it (the first & second times, 2 years ago), there it was...a 3rd time. I didn't actually check after the second episode so who knows how long it has been there. Anyway, I consider this completely unprofessional and completely unacceptable. They are on the verge of being outed!

I did a little further checking and I see they posted mine on pinterest and I've heard of it but never use. I went through their process to have it removed. I guess I'll have to wait a few years to see if it all works? Shrug!

Yep, I noticed that the enlarged picture (very nice, I might add) said 'via garden.org'. And when I scrolled down further I saw the smaller copy and it said 'via pinterest'. That's when I realized you could really be up a creek. People copy stuff left and right from Pinterest. Sorry that happened to you.

This happens so frequently and it seems like most people keep on stealing photos. Pinterest will take them down. Ebay and Etsy are very slow to do so and make it so difficult that most people give up. I checked that site, and saw many photos taken by others with no credit.

Looking through their other pictures... seems like they're just lifting their images from Pinterest right and left, though it's not clear who did the actual uploading to Pinterest.

Among the Dudleya images I looked at, there were also examples taken from succulentguide.com, DG, and Flickr without credits. I don't think people realize how easy it is to track down the original source images (and secure permission!).

The World of Succulents page does say via garden.org but they are the ones who also put it on pinterest. It's on their boards and that links back to their site. That's how it looks to me. This is my first look at pinterest so I could be wrong about this. Such a tired old newb but I'll figure it out. Tommorow.. I tip my hat to you.

Even easier on a mac to find dup or similar images. Just click on an image and choose google search image from the list of options.

Funny story related to Pinterest.... one of my succulent pictures got uploaded there, with my name but not my permission. So down the road somebody must have been surfing Pinterest, because they got my name mixed up with the name of the plant, and it ended up here attached to somebody else's photo of that plant. Hilarious!

Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing Clearly the journalist didn't even do a proper Google search.

At least Pinterest provides a link back to the source page. Most people who use it don't think about copyright - it's just a way to tag and collect all the images they like in one place.

But if you're taking the photo off this site (given that Dave has made it so that the average user cannot right-click on a photo and download it), then there must be at least a reasonable level of intent to breach copyright, especially with the copyright statements on almost every photo. The lack of respect for other people and their property just frustrates me Grumbling A simple courtesy message asking if they could use the image would probably be met with "Yes" more often than not. Instead they just take because the consequences are so minimal for them.

I agree that caution is advised when sharing anything on the Internet. However, it's important to remember that those who are stealing the images are in the wrong, not those who shared their photo in the first place. Be careful that your line of reasoning doesn't become victim-blaming if you take it to the nth degree.

That's like saying that if you ever take your car out of your locked garage then you shouldn't complain when it gets stolen.

People who use other people's photos without permission are stealing others' property. To put it simply, they are thieves.

Hmmm. I don't see it. If you put a photo on the internet, knowing there is little to no security on the internet, then I think you are accepting the risk that someone may lift it and do what they want with it. Perhaps that is victim-blaming, I don't know.

Reliable sources will approach you here, generally via T-mail, and offer to buy your photos for their commercial use. Last time I was contacted the going rate was $50. It is only sleazes that steal them.

Of course putting things out there leaves you vulnerable but it is frustrating (not to mention illegal) when someone else profits from your work. Wouldn't hurt to contact the offender and suggest a reimbursement be made. Tell them you are keeping copies of all instances and your messages to them (whether you are or not) just to make them aware you have documents IF it ever went to small claims court. Not likely of course but it would make you feel better and maybe give them pause. It is also wise to blind copy all correspondence to Etsy, Pinterest or eBay, whichever is involved.

I had this email this morning. They really spread that photo around.

Dear Leslie,
Thank you for your message! I sincerely apologize for this unauthorized use of your photo!
Your photo is removed from our site.

It's good that you finally got results. Hurray!

A while back I figured out it was easier for me to have each of my photos listed as GNU; free to share. (I'm still catching up on images uploaded before I came to that decision.) Now I don't have to lose any sleep and can be flattered if someone uses one of my images. Saves a ton of headache. I'm not a professional photographer and don't derive any income from my images, so no harm done.

I would hope that Pinterest gives a similar response, and also that they have a 3 strike system or similar to discourage that kind of behavior in the future. Snipping off the copyright info and uploading the image is exactly the kind of thing they should come down hard on.

In my mind the situation comes down to this. Say somebody is putting together a web site with plant pictures, and they don't have pictures for a lot of plants. In order to complete that site, they need very specific pictures. One way is to solicit pictures from people who have uploaded them to a database (garden.org) and give them credit. Another way is to just use the pictures and not give credit or ask permission.

In the second case you have to ask yourself what is the value added by each picture, or specifically how badly would you want that picture if you had to pay for it. Not to turn everything into a transaction, but it's a straightforward comparison between not having the pictures and having them. What are they worth?

If anybody asks me for the use of my pictures, I would most likely give them away and simply ask for credit, because I respect the fact that they ask.

I've been asked before and said yes and they asked if I wanted to be credited with the photo but I instead credited it to Hamilton Square Garden. So it isn't about the money in my case or the credit but about courtesy and the law among other things. I'll check all of my photos now as I'm curious. I've quickly found another already. uncropped. I post nowhere but here so it won't be a headache and there aren't so many that I can recognize my own instantly. Thanks for all the comments. I tip my hat to you.
