Decided to take pics today of my cactus babies
This one had a long dried out stem about 22 inches tall, I did surgery on it, now it is 5 inches, still no roots but I'm hoping!

It takes real restraint not to over water. I killed so much in the early days, but now have finally learned.

Nice growing, Greg, and in Washington; too.
For me, succulents have been the calculus of plant culture. After becoming less dangerous with succulents, the ones who survived are looking pretty good. But I am not ready for cacti. It would be inhumane.

Right about now a lot of places including Walmart are putting lots of plants on their sale table to clear space for Christmas stuff. I hate to think of what happens to them if they are not sold, but I suspect they would not be celebrating Thanksgiving.
Why not rescue a little cactus or two off the sale table, and even if they have to hang on while you are negotiating a learning curve, at least they are not in the trash compacter.

Laurie it is a learning curve, fast draining soil is a must!
I agree with Lucille experimenting using cheap plants that are less important to you can be good... Repotting as soon as you get them home is mandatory! Keeping the pot near the same size but replacing the soil will help. Once our temperatures go into the 40s I water only a little bit every two or three weeks...i have most of mine in my windowsills

Wow Greg- I had no idea what you are up to down there in the city, I thought you were just working on the yard and streambank!
So impressive.
I do have to share with you- my first thought when seeing the decorative orange burlap pot wrap in that photo was- "Greg has to knit sweaters for his cacti because it is so cold and gloomy and rainy here now!"
