Welcome! gingersprat.....we all use different things to start our irises, i think it's because of our different climates, soil conditions including ph values.

in my socal garden i have very dry conditions, we are considered desert with a marine influence. i live about a mile and a half from the pacific ocean. our soil is very sandy, with very little composted vegetable matter. the soil does not hold water or nutients very well, and is more alkaline. i don't use alfalfa; i have read somewhere that it elevates bacterial growth which may cause rot.

so i use a different combination of monophosphate, chelated iron, humic acid, a bit of sulfur, bonemeal, (when i first plant) and from time-to-time osmocote, organic rose food, and liquid algo all purpose fertilizer. i tend to fertilize more than the others, but my nutrients seem to leach out quickly. also, i only apply everything half strength because i would rather fertilize more often than full strength.

Welcome! Peggy @PeggyC

Welcome! Virginia @gingersprat

I am fairly new to the iris forum, though I have been a member for a while now. If you read through some past threads of the Iris Forum, you can get to see the members many, many beautiful irises, as well as their experiences in their gardens and lives as well.

When I first started reading and looking at all the beautiful irises, I was overwhelmed as it was much better than viewing a limited catalog that you may receive in the mail. That said, this is a wonderful group of people who love irises. They are very helpful and generous (to a fault! ). nodding

So stay with us throughout the fall and winter, as we look forward to a beautiful spring.

I will add my welcome to those above. Welcome! Smiling but add a note of caution..... If you do stick around you will definitely catch the iris virus. Since we cannot be with you in person to comfort you, while you suffering from this malady, we will have to post photos, share rhizomes and make you aware of any opportunities to acquire more irises.
