Today's plant of the day for Sempervivum is Hen and Chick (Sempervivum 'Lion King').

A large and robust growing semp from Howard Wills (Great Britain), medium production of offsets. A semp worthy of using as a parent.
This plant can be found in our Plant Database at:

One of my favorites! It isn't the flashiest one but it has really good size and a very tough rosette that increases well. The flowers resemble the cantabricums and it may be a seedling of one of them.

Howard said it was a volunteer seedling so the parentage is unknown.

Seedlings from it so far have been very interesting although I made WAY more seed with it this year. The monstrous flower stalks have over 100 flowers so I could make all sorts of crosses! This is one that could me those football sized ones I'm hoping for....

Julia, It does make an ENORMOUS stalk. It is much bigger than the cantabricum stalks that it resembles so I'm betting it's got a mix of tectorum and cantabricum blood. The pollen from this plant is pretty and fluffy and spreads over lots of flowers. Think they could be fun.

My Lion King is a little tipsy. I tried to re-position it once but looks like it needs it again. Maybe the center is a little top-heavy?

Bev,

Sometimes you get a rosette where the stolon side of the offset never grows as well as the side away from the stolon. I think that's the case with yours. Generally the next generation is fine though.

Thanks for that interesting piece of info, Kevin. Hopefully the next generation will squeeze on out of this tipsy rosette. Will have to keep a close eye that the center doesn't get damaged. I actually had this same problem with a faux-heuffelii and it finally right-ed itself after two re-positionings.

Bev, what is a faux-heuffelii, and how can we identify them?

I am finding I just love the tiny little semps. Some of the huge ones are a bit ugly to me.

Oops, you got me on my faux pas with labeling Karen. I meant a heuffelii that was mis-labeled, not a fake heuffelii. It really is a heuffelii, just not the one I thought I had.

'Lion King' is interesting. Flat and plain in the Fall and Winter. Upright and multi-colored in the Spring. I wanted this one despite its large size and tall stature. I put it near an Agave so it would know who the real "king" is. I guess I'd better do something about that little, biddy Sedum there.

Looks like that sedum may be on the attack! Watch Out!
