Looking at the leaves, I thought maybe one of the native croton species....

Looking at the bloom stalk.... Pretty much leaves them out....
Possibly one of the many salvia varieties.

Too bad that you dont have a pic of the flowers....

Unfortunately no flowers were on the plant at the time.
