How fun!

Front yard in 2013 and now. We (my two daughters and I) took all the grass out, front and back. The neighborhood landscaper wanted $1500 for just the front lawn - not including the mow strip or back lawn. We rented a sod cutter for $120 (that included the trailer), took out my lawn (front, back and mow strip), my neighbor's front lawn and mow strip and my daughter's front lawn and had the sod cutter back before dinner. Smiling I also added a drain under the gravel in the front yard so my landscape wouldn't float away during the summertime thunderstorms.

Side yard in 2013 and now. I did not put in the greenhouse myself but the greenhouse putter-upper was the only person I hired. I had to have it engineered to withstand 100 mph winds (130 ultimate) to pass city inspection. Its first test came a month later when we had 90 mph winds! There was a lot of creaking and groaning but its still standing.

Spot the Red Eared Slider enjoying his new digs in the greenhouse. I've had him for over 20 years so he's a pretty laid back turtle.

I agree That was quite a transformation, Daisy!

My "before and afters" seem to go more in the other direction... I used to have hostas and flowers in the back yard...

We had a butterfly bush just like yours and at the end of the summer , bout a month ago, I dead headed it like I had been and it appears to have died. I mean real quick like. I thought it just went dormant, but now I think it's dead. Did yours do that? Sighing!

When you say "appears to have died," what does that mean exactly? The leaves fell off? Or?

Actually, my growing conditions are so much different than yours that I'm sure I'm not the best one to say what to expect from your butterfly bush... I just cut mine way back every fall and it would come back from the roots in the spring. No idea what they do in Florida ... Confused I hope someone from that area can help you! Smiling

thank you sandy, yes actually the leaves were blown off during hurricane Irma. it was prolly too much for her. she took so long to establish, and then one day ,boom she was sprouting and blooming all over the place. it usually is the soil, I have to research the plant a little more. they said to prune it down to 2 feet at the end of the growing season, so I tried that. she still has green at the base so maybe all hope is not lost. no new growth anywhere though as you can see...thank you for the reply! I appreciate it!

Front & side 2017. Instead of fixing the whole porch, we replaced about 2/3 of it & now there is also a patio area, bars for hanging plants, and a little block wall that takes the pounding of the rain & has stopped a lot of the wash-out that was happening at the front:

TY, Daisy, if your comment was directed @ me. TY, Johnny! The tractor was borrowed, to get rid of a lot of trash & fix the contour of the ground so water would stop flowing into the laundry room when it rained really hard. The garden may be new but the house was built in 1901.
