Only for shape. I've always done it while the leaves are off just because it so much easier to see the structure, but if they are not deciduous where you are, that wouldn't be an option. The more branching you can cause, the more figs there will be.

Tiffany, they may be deciduous way up there in Northern Florida. Mine (a Celeste) does lose all its leaves every winter, and I'm halfway down the peninsula.

I don't prune my fig at all unless there is a branch sticking out into the pathway. IF you prune now, you may lose part of your spring crop of figs. They grow on the new growth from this last summer/fall.

On the other hand, Figs take well to pruning. I have grown them as Bonsai. Prune as much as you like but remember, you will be sacrificing the first 'spring' crop.
