I decided a week ago to see if I could locate Alexander Woolcott. Needless to say, it is difficult to find early in the season. As luck would have it, I found it at A & D Peony Farm. I have not heard them mentioned here that I remember. But they had a great selection (especially some hard to find varieties) and great prices. They sell herbaceous, itoh, and tree peonies. Here is the root I got today beside a large bottle of Gatorade.

Large root, nice shape, and 6 + eyes. I will visit them again. And needless to say, I am happy to have Alexander Woollcott.

A&D does send nice sized roots but I've had several mis-ids from them. Hopefully yours will bloom first year and be true to name, if not let them know because they will make it right.
I'm waiting for my final roots for the fall to arrive today, UPS delivery and our house is always the guy's last stop. Doesn't really matter, it's 28 degrees out there and spitting rain/icy pellets so I wouldn't plant today even if our house was first!

Ouch. Reminds me of what I planted in. then after it was done, the weather warmed up to the mid 40's with a nice Chinook breeze. Figures. Hilarious!

It was close to freezing here last night. It snowed in the mountains. But, the ground isn't frozen yet. Winter is coming.

Our ground won’t be frozen for some time now. I actually dug up a clump of foxtail lilies this morning and replanted a few after dividing but that was easy digging in a raised bed. Hate these few really cold days in an otherwise really pleasant fall, it was 70 yesterday and will be back in the 50s tomorrow.

You couldn't have chosen a nicer red peony, Gary! AW will definitely benefit from a bit of shade esp. the afternoon sun.

Liz, your area's weather is like a roller coaster ride! Do you find that it's always like that or the extremes happen more frequently in recent years?

Seems like Liz's springs are even worse. I seem to recall warm, then freeze, then warm, then snow, then then. lol. It is so surprising that we can share a zone, and even some general weather conditions, and yet our physical location dictates definite differences in what and when we can grow things. We are holding in the low 40's with rain for now. Hoping the peonies are taking advantage of the weather and growing new feeder roots.

If you're not a gardener you might actually enjoy the crazy CO weather mood swings! I know I loved going around in shorts in March and was able to drive my convertible with the top down well into November a few years. Now paying for those really nice days that we have during winter with crazy cold days earlier in the fall and late in the spring is the bane of my garden....I haven't kept count personally but was told that we've had May blizzards 11 out of the last 13 years so it's been going on a while. Tried to look it up myself but the page I pulled up was wrong, said our last snows were in April in 2016 and 2017 but I know it was in May.

I also got one root from Gold City. They send roots online. They are closed now and will re-open some time in February (maybe March).

Christmas came early for me this year! Didn't think I was going to get itoh peony Scrumpdillyicious but an extremely generous NGA friend came through and gave me this wonderful gift as well as the true Berry Garcia, Roseheart, and Folkart. Thank You! Thank You! Thank You! Can't remember being this excited for a long time! Hilarious! Hilarious! Hilarious!
Have been working hard last two days getting everything ready. It's too late for them to be planted now so they will be going into their prepared spaces tomorrow. Awesome looking roots:

Thanks Yan and LG! And i thought these were my final roots until I saw Frank's post about Klemn SOng Sparrow Peony Sale. All restraint went out the window and I ordered 5 more peonies. I don't know whether to feel Hurray! or D'Oh! or Shrug! or Green Grin! What is an addict supposed to do with a peony sale?

Well, I resisted Klehm's although there were two I would really liked to have. But I absolutely have no place to put them, unless I haul out the rototiller to break up frozen top layer and cultivate a messy bed. Maybe next year. I need to see how the ones I planted this year do.
