Lin, TYVM! I'm hoping to catch that plant with its' blooms open, for a database addition. Those little blooms are so shy!

plantladylin said:Aww, thank you ... we just moved here four months ago and I miss having a large center island but I do like this kitchen which is more updated than at our other house. We currently have an little round table in the middle of the kitchen that does not serve any purpose other than collecting junk. There's a large breakfast area leading into the kitchen with a more usable table so I plan to donate the little one to a thrift shop in the very near future. Smiling

What shy blooms these are @ my house. I failed to catch the pic I wanted but this plant is still alive. Believe it or not, there's some damage to some leaves from a got-too-dry episode. After killing so many plants in my early plant-days with too much water added to crappy soil, there's a small degree of pleasure in having let the other extreme occur.

The blooms like like they are finished by now.

I put this plant next to a S window for winter & am delighted by the tight growth. I feel bad about putting this baby "in a corner" previously but she probably didn't care as much as I wish she had always looked like this.

And it's time to confess, I also put a little Jade in a similarly-sized pot that also has no drain hole. It started with a couple sprigs of Alternanthera & wax Begonia which have died of thirst but Jade looks good. I'll get a pic when I "unpack" everything again this weekend.

Yes! Striped Inch Plant (Callisia gentlei var. elegans)
It's the exact same plant as the first post. Not a different individual of the same kind, but the exact same individual.

re: plastic pots inside cachepot
i move plants for display a lot, so i usually put the plastics inside the ceramic without holes.
and most my plants are on self-watering wicks. so i always need some little space at the bottom for water and then something to prop the inner pot higher. half-pint flat deli-tubs are my best friend: stab and rotate with my fiskars shears and i have a hole for a wick/air. sometimes i put larger pots right on top of a tub with water in it, or flip it upside down as a prop. you can cut a hole in the lid too and actually close the tub - this will make it sturdier and even a smaller pot can sit on a larger tub.
i save some bottles caps/supplement caps too ;), wine corks come handy too: throw some in or put down 1-3 flat and you'll get 1/2" of clearance.
pot too deep? stick pieces of postal tape or duct tape cut narrow (turned back on itself) and you have little handles on yr inner pot. even blue painting tape works too.
you can also use sev detergent caps, they'll give you 2" or even more. i use them as micro-mini water vases to stick on top of soil of other plants - when i m lazy and need to keep smth in water and out of the way without spilling it accidentally.

you can also set up a top-water-wick for plants in pots without hole or any other reg pots.
take a piece of thick acrylic/nylon rope, soap it up and rinse so it can wick, otherwise there is sizing in it that repels water. Stick it anywhere into the top sev inches of soil and drop the other end into a jar/bottle of water. it'll serve as top-wick and give the plant extra water - the top wick cannot overwater the plant as it is imbedded just in the top 2 -3".
i set up my succulents to be watered like that and put them in very hard to reach spaces on the window sill. and they sit like that happy all winter. on cold sills AND with just enough water to keep them going...and in full sun too :).
if you need MORE watering, then run top wick half-way (or all the way) around the rim of the pot buried 1-1.5" below surface. my large ZZ's and sansevieria/huge jades get water like that all winter too. they never get too wet - just perfect. works in any soil that has peat in it.
for your in-ground callisia you can dig down a bottle into soil so it does not overturn and drop a water-wick in it. can add a drop of detergent as anti-mosquito.

Here's the Jade w/o a drain hole. I love its' shape & graceful branches. It's been about 6 months. Part of me wants to move it to a pot with a hole, part of me wants to keep going as-is. It's outside but under porch roof so it can't get rained on, getting direct sun from sunrise until about 10:30-11.

In this situation, of course only a Britney Spears quote will do, "oops, I did it again." How could I stop myself after finding these cute pots, and having 2 cute plants that "needed" them? (No, really, I believe they're not pencil holders or anything else, ...really!)

Think I'll do this today. Don't think the little 3 or 3.5" plastic pot is visible, but that's what this plant is in, sitting inside the more decorative hole-less pot. It's thirsty every day. If E. milii is never allowed to be rained on, why not? The only times I've killed a Euphorbia were from thirst, trying to keep Poinsettias alive.

Crown of Thorns (Euphorbia milii) is fairly drought tolerant and under your care, I know it will do well in a no-drain pot! Those pale yellow blooms are really pretty!

I've never been a huge fan of plants with thorns or spines but I really, really love the variegated foliage on Crown of Thorns (Euphorbia milii 'Fireworks') and I'd probably find myself buying that one if I saw it for sale somewhere. Green Grin!

When we moved a few years ago, there was a Crown of Thorns growing at the base of a Phoenix robelenii palm just outside the screened porch in an area that only got water when it rained. Every time I would be in that area weeding or planting something, I'd get stuck with those awful thorns and since I don't much like thorny plants, one day I dug it out! I seriously thought about potting it up but changed my mind and it went out with yard trash because I couldn't find anyone who wanted it.
