Those born after 1980 will have probably never heard of the singer songwriter Harry Chapin. He was killed in a freak accident at the height of his musical career. For those who knew him, remember an old friend and let me know your favorite. I have so many favorites but I guess my all time favorite is "A Better Place To Be".

He wrote and sang amazing 'story songs'. His most mainstream and popular were Cat's in the Cradle, Taxi and WOLD.

Checked out this live version of "Cat's In the Cradle" and discover more of his work if you like.

"The Universe speaks in many languages, but only one voice. It speaks in the language of hope; It speaks in the language of trust; It speaks in the language of strength, and the language of compassion. It is the language of the heart and the language of the soul. But always, it is the same voice. It is the voice of our ancestors, speaking through us, And the voice of our inheritors, waiting to be born. It is the small, still voice that says: We are one. No matter the blood; No matter the skin; No matter the world; No matter the star; We are one. No matter the pain; No matter the darkness; No matter the loss; No matter the fear; We are one. Here, gathered together in common cause. we agree to recognize this singular truth, and this singular rule: That we must be kind to one another, because each voice enriches us and ennobles us, and each voice lost diminishes us. We are the voice of the Universe, the soul of creation, the fire that will light the way to a better future. We are one."

Thanks for this post. I miss Harry. Group hug Lovey dubby

I remember Cat's in the Cradle only too well. When Harry was recording the album in Bridgeport, Connecticut (my hometown), he had an idea that he wanted something at the beginning of the song. Not that Harry would copy another artist, but if you remember "He's So Vain" by Carly Simon...at the very beginning of the song you can hear a voice whisper very quietly...'listen!'.

At the beginning of Cat's, Harry thought it would be good to have a voice, a rather nasal voice similar to that of a telephone operator...oops, I just dated myself again; there are no more live telephone operators, are there?!...anyway, I was a 'gopher' at the recording studio and had the right kind of voice. Ron and Paul recorded my voice saying, "You've got to listen if you really want to hear"...repeated twice. No, not good enough. They had me stick money into the pay phone in the hall and call into the recording booth to say it again, and yet again. Yes, that's perfect. Thumbs up (Well, they thought it was perfect, but...)

Harry was a perfectionist. He could hear an entire composition in his head and knew exactly what each note and voice should contribute. He listened to the tape of my voice and he just said, 'no'. I ended up on the cutting room floor. Sad

My favorite song is 'Taxi'. I could sing that song in my sleep - and often do. Thumbs up

What a wonderful story! Did you hear the Taxi sequel?

Here is a link with both of them!

Taxi was my favorite, too. I had a friend who could play it on his guitar, and sing the song, and you would swear it was Harry himself.

I still listen to all that old stuff. I know no music or singers after the 70s. Hilarious!
