Trees and Shrubs forum: leave or trim?

my maple had an issue last fall and I am wondering if anyone thinks it should get trimmed off or left?

There won't be much left of your tree if you cut that section out. I would be sure that water cannot collect in the bottom of the split - create a drain if needed, and otherwise leave it alone.

That's your main trunk. If you cut that off then you might as well cut down the whole tree. You can leave it for now and keep an eye on it or make sure the water can drain away there at the bottom and have a lesser chance of rotting.
